Question 1: In what ways does your media use, develop or challenge forms and convenstions of real media products?

Opening sequence establish characterisation, setting, genre, visual appearance and ideology in a number of ways. this is done by using different media affects in a variety of ways.

In our opening sequence we established the setting by using a range of effective camera angles and shots. This helped the audience understand where the opening sequence was set as it was clear to see it was set in a woodland area. The use of different camera angles and shots sets the tone of the opening sequence as it can show different things such as vulnerablitiy as we showed in parts of our sequence.

We established characterisation by the use of different props such as clothing and makeup also we establish it by the acting of Jess as she acts scared and happy. We opted to go for a scruffy clothing look as we thought this was very effctive in showing the audience the girl was involved with drugs and she wasnt ok. This was the same with the makeup it was smudged clearly showing something was wrong. The way Jess acted was to be happy at the start then turn scared and vulnerable towards the end this se characterisation as it helped the audeince feel sorry for the girl even though she was on drugs.

We established genre by the use of a girl on drugs also the way she acted being happy and sad in the same opening sequence. By using a girl that is messed up in the mind it helps the show the type of genre we are using which is a physcological thriller.

We established visual style in a variety of ways but the most obvious ways are the use of clothing, makeup and jewellery. By using a simple going out dress shows that she had been out and then ended up taking drugs and ended in trouble. The makeup used shows that she had been out aswell and got into trouble because of the smudged look. Again the jewellery shows that she had been out.

We establsihed ideology by the use of drug taking, normally the ideology of someone taking drugs is a negative view. But in our opening sequence we have twisted it so that viewers feel sorry for the young girl as she is shown to be vulnerable .

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our sequence we have only used one character Jess Hutchinson we decided to use Jess as we believe she had the right attributes and correct characteristics to fit this role. In our sequence we are looking to target the typical teen steriotyped group. The typical teen group is associated with drugs, drinking, smoking and going out having a wild time. The first thing we thought about was age Jess fits this perfectly as she is a 16 year old teenager girl. The next factor was clothing we decided to use, we opted for a party dress which resembles the girl having been out at a party, the dress was simillar to a topshop one a popular shop amongst the teen group. Also the use of jewellery is popular amongst teens. The smudge makeup shows something wrong has happend to the girl as this is not normal, this has happend because of drugs. All these factors come together and show the target audience something simillar to what has happend to them or what they have witnessed before at partys.

Question 3: What kind of media institute might distribute your media project and why?

Our project is no Hollywood masterpiece so we wont need a big film company such as MGM to distribute it. All our project is, is a simple low budget english film so the perfect distributer for this would be Film 4 a low budget english film company. Also because our film is a small low budget piece it wont need to be distributed globally. Flim 4 is linked with channel 4 and the very popular E4 which is a huge hit with the teen's as it brodcast's Skins a popular show within the teen group, making this a perfect institution to distribute our film as would link to our target audience. Film 4 was the distributer for the massive hit slumdog millionaire which recived oscar for its outstanding efforts. Our sequence could be simillar to the bullet boy film distributed by verve pictures again a small distributer, even though it was small it still found great success and made a huge profit. This is why Film4 would be ideal to distribute our opening sequence.

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media project?

Our target audience would be the Teen group as we are trying to represent a steriotypical teenager from our project. Someone that gets drunk is wild likes to party and take drugs. Taking these factors into consideration we decided to use Jess. She is a 16 year old girl with the style and characterisation to fit the role which we needed. because it was aimed at teens we need to costume to be right so we went for a dress similar to one of topshop which is popular amongst teens therefore given them something to relate to. also the jewellery and makeup used helps the audience relate to this as jewellery is a thing which teens are keen about also they like to use makeup. by using a character simillar to the target audience it helps the audience relate to the character therefore making them more likely to watch and enjoy the film.

Question 5: How did you attract/adress your audience?

To recieve audinece feedback on our opening sequence also to see if our piece was successful enough in appealing and and attracting our taregt audience, we posted our video on facebook. By doing this it allowed us to see what people thought about our video especially our target audience as they gave feedback on what they just saw. From the feedback we got from facebook most of it was very positive with pretty much all of the comments explaing how amazing it was. one thing that was said alot was about the sound effects, saying how well they convey the whole piece to be "trippy". this is what we wanted people to beleive what was happening is real, also another point people put across was about her "state of mind" and how well she portrayed herself actully be on drugs. Again this was great as we wanted people to believe that she had actully taken drugs. We also asked people in our media class and people from other media classes to watch our video and give us views on what they thought was good and bad in our video. A common reaction to the video is "why is she acting like this". Some of the viewers didnt understand and grasp why she was jumping around laughing and so on. So from this feedback we filmed again adding the side shot of jess taking drugs. this answerd to questions of the viewers who didnt understand the first attempt as it made it perfectly clear why she was acting in that strange way. Also we left our filming on a cliff hanger as thisd would encourage viewers to want to watch on as they would be drawn to what was happening.

We handed out questionnaires to people in our targer audience age range to see what they thought about our video, hoping we would recieve some quality feedback.

Question 1: Did you like our opening sequence?

From this question we wanated to find out if people enjoyed the opening sequence. the feedback we recieved was great as 98% said they enjoyed it, this shows that it was popular amongst our target audience. so we must have protrayed the typical teen steriotype well as they could relate to jess and enjoy the opening sequence.

Question 2: What genre would you class our opening sequence?

From this question we were looking to see if we had hit the right genre in our target audiences eyes. From the graph it shows a high majority of our viewers said they believed it was a physcological thriller. obviously to make an effective vthat appeals to your target audience you have to set the right genre. Some people said they thought it was a thriller, but we understand why this has happend. Physcological thriller is a sub genre of thriller so we can understand the misunderstand of this and why it happend.

Question 3: Did you understand the narrative of the opening sequence

We wanted to make the narrative eeasy to understand which would mean making it as clear as we possibly could. from the pie chart it shows that a high percentage of people understood the whole concept of what we were trying to achieve which is poisitive to know.

Question 4: would you continue to watch on?

Everyone we asked said they would want to watch on if it was to continue. we asked them way and most of the responses we recieved was they felt eager on what was going to happen as it left them on the edge of the seat as the opening was soo intense.

Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product

I have learnt a variety of different things about technologies from creating our opening sequence. One thing is the research we did on the internet for example i did some research on genres this helped us decide on a ideal genre to use. Another important thing i learnt is planning about different cameras to use, there are a variety of different types of cameras to use for example sony and panasonic we wanted to use a camera that would give us good visual results not a scruffy dim filming which would ruin the whole sequence. Another thing i have learnt about is the editing software sony vagas, by using this i learnt how to edit the filming we had collected, this is an important factor as it is vital in creating the perfect sequence. Also adding music into the filming is very good at setting the the right scene wether you want a happy or tense scene. By using all these different factors i learnt alot about different kinds of technologies and the importance of them in the media world.

Question 7: Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to full product

From our preliminary task we completed i have learnt many new things, things that have helped the group progress and improve to create a better opening sequence that the preliminary task. One things we did wrong in the preliminary task is that we didnt use a tripod which made the filming more shakey and look un-realsitic, to improve this in the opening sequence we ensured we used a tripod so that filming wasnt shakey or un-realistic. A struggle in the preliminary task was the equipment shortage we had which meant that the filming we got was very late coming and the editing we did wasnt to a high standard as it ws last minute. to avoid this problem in the opening sequence we made sure we go a camera early we did this by using one blaise provided from home. this meant that we had a long time to film and perfect in the editing sector. Also to get 2 minutes of filming rather than 20 seconds was alot harder and also it was harder to plan and edit it as there was more to think about, for example more camera shots, angles, editing, music and sound effects, to think about. this made the whole thing more time consuming and ended up completing the editing in lunch times and frees. In our preliminary task we used a drug dealing scene and for the opening sequence we went for the idea of a girl taking drugs. So we used roughly the same camera shots and angles but for the Opening sequece we used some different ones for example to make jess look more vulnerable.

Wednesday 27 January 2010

Hey!!

Hi Im Luke :D
We have been asked to produce a short opening to a film by using a variety of camera angles and then edit the filming. I have started this blog to record my progress through the whole media studies assingment.

Group-
Toby Nolan!

Blaise Tsierkezou

Laura College...

Together we form Beasty BLT Productions :-)

Task1-
our first practical assingment was to complete a preliminary task which included a range of camera angles, editing, dilogue and the 180° rule. By exploring a range of camera angles we can find the best ones to interest our viewers.

Match on action is when you cut during an action shot to another camera angle showing the action from the same point in time that you left it from the previous shot. This is used to show two different points of view so that the audience get an understanding of both characters.

The 180° rule identifys which side of the screen characters are during a clip, and the characters are kept on the same sides throughout. If this is not done, this is called "Breaking the 180° rule" and can lead to confusion and in the clip. When applying the 180° rule the clip tends to look neater and flow easier.

For our preliminary task we filmed a drug deal which included a range of camera angles and techniques. One technique which was used is the CCTV style from a high angle view this is effective at making the scene look realistic.

Editing-
Editing is taking the filming and changing it to make it all fit and During editing we made sure that everyone used was wearing the same outfits because if they changed it could cause confusion for the viewer.

Setting-
We decided to film our preliminary task at school in a dark corner, we looked at many different possible film locations but as a group thought it was most suitable to film in a corner with a window above so we could apply the CCTV editing part.

Plot-
As a group first we was thinking about doing some sort of teacher pupil related scene where the pupil is being told of or some sort of school bullying scene. But after a while we decided a drug deal amongst a few students at school would be good as we could add a number of clinical camera angles and editing techniques in there.

Filming-
for filming we explored a variety of camera angles and techniques so we could find the best to use. I think the best one we used was the high angle view on the drug deal and then edited it after to make it look like CCTV footage.

This is the storyboard for our first task, we took screen grabs from the finished piece so it looked very realistic and there werent rubbish drawings on there.

Evaluation-
Overall the task went very well witht he group happy about the outcome of the video we produced. during the course of filming there were no arguments on what to do or what happend so this was good for the group. Blaise was filming because she has a very good eye for a perfect shot and she also has a steady hand. Me, Toby, Laura and Harry were all acters in the scene because we were wearing clothing with hoods on, on that particualr day so we could put these up and make the drug deal look very believeable and realistic. I think the best part of the clip was when blaise went upstairs to film us, she was filiming out of the window using a high angle view on the drug deal below. We then edited this particular part to make it look like a CCTV camera catching us in action. the way we did this is by using a tool that made the clip fuzzy and adding writing to the clip. Parts that we could improve on were that we didnt use a tripod when filming so this made the clip abit shakey and wobbly making it look abit unrealistic and silly. so when filming the real task we have made sure to get a tripod. also there was a camera shortage and it took us a while to get a camera so we ended up bringing a camera from home. but by the time we did this we didnt have much time left to film and edit leaving it tight to hit the deadline, but we managed :D, so Overall we did fairly well and we can take on all the knowledge from filming this into the real task. so all thats left to do is add the video for all you viewers so enjoy! :D

Research into films-
Skins- Our groups began to watch episodes of the TV Series Skins, as it is a teen drama about young adults and what goes on in there lifes. We watched a stereotype scenario of a young girl taking drugs, with point of view shots of her paranoia and distorted vision. Non-diegetic sound is used in parts of the clip which brings tension and suspense to the viewers of what will happen next. We took note during the sequence alot of camera shots we had already talked about had been used, this made us very confident in our planning. The director used lighting in parts of the clip to add to the distortion of vision and the young girls messy state of mind. Blue and orange tinges of lighting add to the strangeness and worked well with the use of a blurry fuzzy effect which portrayed the girls point of view.
Shrooms- Our group also looked at parts of the film Shrooms. This film is all about a small group of young adults that go camping in a forest, learn about and take "shrooms". The film shows what happens when shrooms are consumed by the characters. The genre of the film is Horror as there are certain parts where there are "scary" characters and killing scenes. This film also used blurred effects which works very well and makes it more interesting and help understand the situation for the audience. It also had a shot fairly similar to a skins one in the forest, showing the trees above in a 360 degree pan. The group found this very effective, as it showed the characters on a high also spinning around portraying them to be dizzy or there vision and mind distorted. Again another interesting shot was when the camera was put on its side. This is very effective at making the sequence feel very strange and distorted, this could be included in our opening sequence also.

Donnie Darko- Finally the group looked at Donnie Darko, as the genre of this film is a psychological thriller and included interesting and strange camera angles that suited our genre. Donnie Darko is a film about a boy who becomes possessed by a strange half man half rabbit friend, "Frank". The lighting during the course of the film is extremely dark and is hard this makes it more intense. In one scene the camera work is very effective and as a group spoke about using it in our sequence. The camera does a full 360 degree turn from the characters point of view in slow motion. This adds the the distortion and psychological thrill to the film and adds confusion and tension for the viewing audience.

Genre-
Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the wide-ranging thriller genre. However, this genre often incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre in addition to the typical traits of the thriller genre. Also, occasionally this genre will border into the also wide-ranging Horror genre.
Generally, thrillers focus on plot over character, and thus emphasize intense, physical action over the character's psyche. Psychological thrillers tend to reverse this formula to a certain degree, emphasizing the characters just as much, if not more so, than the plot.
The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the other's mental state.
Sometimes the suspense comes from within one solitary character where characters must resolve conflicts with their own minds. Usually, this conflict is an effort to understand something that has happened to them. These conflicts are made more vivid with physical expressions of the conflict in the means of either physical manifestations, or physical torsions of the characters at play.
Typical conventions of our chosen genre:
Themes- A typical convention of this genre would be a film where a character is medded up in the head such as chainsaw massacre
Growing sense of danger- This is where the film will get more tense throughout where the music becomes louder or the character gets more scared and nervous by the minute an example for this is the hills have eyes
Lighting used to set the tone- In the grudge the lighting is very dark and this sets a tone where the viewers are nervous and scared for the actor
Colours are used to represent- For example red is used in films such as star wars to represent danger or badness
Camera movement- A sudden movement where the camera spins round fast will show a scene where something jumps out on the character an example is hills have eys when he is walking through the dusty village
Extraordinary things- An example of this is paranormal activity which is set in a average house but strange things happen such as the light swinging and women getting dragged from the bed.
Genre types-
Adventure - These types usually have some sort of character or a group set of on a journey. for example lord of the rings. Normally there is some sort of problems that face the group or person on the way to there destination that they have to overcome.

Action - These types of films normally known to consist of some sort of fight, chase on foot, chase in a car, explosion and major stunts. Also they normally use well known, quality actors so the film is more believeable. For example james bond

Animation - These are cartoons made for children which involves characters that are normally doing something good for example toy story

Comedy - Comedys main task is to mke the audience laugh. normally it has an odd storyline that you wont normally be used to. For example run fatboy run

Horror - horrors consists of scary scenes and messed up characters that aim to scare the viewers. For example paranomal activity

Crime - Normally crimnes consist of a something to do with the police such as a killing. throughtout the film the police are looking for the killer to stop him. But whilst the killer is loose he is killing more. Also there will be evidence that they have to put together to find him. For example dirty harry

Historical films - Historical films are trying to show things that have happend in history to the viewers. The director will try an re-create the events. for example Saving private Ryan.

Western - These films are normally set in old times america. They hold a conflict between olden day cowboy and Indians involving guns bows and arrows, dusty towns and sheriffs. For example terror of tiny town.

Science fiction - The types are normally set in space and hold alot of special effects that are used to WOW the viewrs because they arent used to seeing these types of things. Aliens and strange planets are normally used. For example star wars.

Musicals - Musicals involve with songs throughout the film that are describing whgat is happening in the film. For example sweeny todd

Starting our film opening sequence-
Planning-
As a group we talked about all the important factors of making a really effective sequence and what will need to be done to acheive this. We all agreed that the first thing we should do is brainstorm all of our ideas on what we wanted our film to be about. From what we all wanted, we all came up with different storylines, props, and characters. This was a very good start as we all listend to ideas and gave support to each other. before we thought it would be hard to agree on idea we would all want to do. We all thought very hard about the editing techniques and camera angles we could useto make full efficetivnessof our chosen genre which is horro/physocological thriller.
Target audience:
The normal target audience for a film such as ours is the teen group as they are normally related to things such as drugs drinking and partying. so becasue of these things it is aimed at the youth of today.

When planning we had to discuss these things:
Genre- What genre we were going to do
Synopsis- What our sequence was going to contain
Location- Where we were going to film
Props- What additional objects were were using in our piece
Characters- Who was acting it our piece
Costume- What our actors were going to wear
Camera shots/filming- The different camera shots being used
Editing- What editing featues and techinques we were using
Sound- What sounds we used in the sequence
Lighting- Lighting used in the sequence

Synopsis-
From the brainstorming our group came out with a breif outline of what our sequence was going to be like.

A young girl awakes in the early hours in some woods with her hair all ruffed up and make up all messy and smudged. She has flashbacks of the night before after taking drugs. the flashbacks are quick across the screen, then a few fast rewind shots flash across the screen. The flashbacks start with her being all cheery and happy laughing and skipping. then suddenly she turns scared and is running through the woods always looking behind her because she thinks someone is chasing her. whilst she is scared we used camera angles that would show the audience what the girl is experience such as point of view. this makes the girll seem vulnerable and unable to contol her own state.

The group decided when planning that we would use simple/standard camera angles and shots for when the girl is on a high such as long shot, high and low angle. but when she has turned scared we decided to use more complex angles simply by distorting the angle and turning the camera on its side to make the viewers feel what the girl is experiencing.

Location-
Firstly we decided to film at maxey lakes as it has plenty of foresty areas thatw ould be perfect for what we wanted. We walked around looking for ideal spots to film were we could take full advantage of the shots and angles we wanted. We all decided on a few spots that were perfect for what we wanted to film which was a big confidence boost as we knew we didnt have to look when filming as we knew spots already. But unfortunatly when we went out to film we only managed to get set up before we found it to dark to film this was bad as time was running out.

So we all went back to the drawing board and thought filming in eye green would be more efficent as we could all get the bus there and it was closer for faye (our actor to get to). Again we went round a lake in eye green before faye got there and found some spots were filming would be perfect. But to our dissapointment we hit another rock as again it got too dark to film this got very frustrating and caused us problems.

So as a group we realised the main problem was the time but the only time faye was avaliable was when it started to get dark. So we got Jessica Hutchinson in who lived in eye and was avalaible all the time. So we went to eye green filming locartion and started filming at half 4 and finished at half 6 which was perfect for us.

Before filming our sequence we took pictures of the lake and spots were we going to use so we knew where to go exactlly as this saved time and gave us something to put on our blogs.

Props-
Our opening sequence for props contains some pills in a pot, these will be shown in the girls hand when she is laying down in a quick flashback at the begining to show her taking these drugs and this shows audience what has happend to the girl. We have also used glow sticks as they add more colour and flare to to the shot this will show the girl has been out partying before the forest seqeunce.

Character-
Our group has only decided to use one character, a teenage girl named Jess, but acting as a young teenage girl. We all decided to use Jess in our opening sequence as she fitted the character perfectly. Cheery, active and can also act vulnerable. We also knew that Jess wouldnt be afraid to get stuck into the acting role we asked her to do.

Costume-
Costume is very important at setting the scene as we needed the right ideology and genre. She will be wearing a dress as this resembles she has been on a night out. We want her to be wearing something modern as this will tell our audience she is a typical teenage girl getting into trouble. Her tights will be torn showing she's is a terible state. Her make up is smudged down her face to make her look rough and asif she has been out all night also so she looks asif she has been crying and uneased. The jewellery (plenty of it) will make her look like she done up nice for the night out. The outfit makes this even more clear to the audience that we are trying to create and messed up girl high on drugs.

Camera shots/filming- We used a wide variety of camera shots to set the scene of the sequence. We used establisishing shots to show the audience where we was filming and long shots again to show the audience where we were but with the characeter in. Alos panning was used int he first bit to show when jess was laying down asleep as this showed her and the setting. We used alot of close ups to show the characters facial expressions. Another cmaera shot we used was an over the sholder shot when jess was running away this was effective as it showed jess was scared and running away from something.
Additional filming-
After finishing all the editing we all discussed as a group that something was missing so we talked and realised we could add a shot of the side of jess appearing to take drugs. we needed to add this in to show the audience this was the reason jess was behaving like this so it made it more clear to the audience it was drugs.
Editing- When editing we thought of different techniques we could use to make the sequence really effective. We used a range a editing techniques one of my favourite was the match cut- this was at the start when we was flashing from jess laying down to her laughing and being scared. Also we played around with the speed in some parts we speed it up to make the audience believe what was happening. this was very effective and made the sequence more gripping when watching it.

Sound-
In the sequence we added a couple sounds in to make the effectivness of the clip work well. the first sound we used was just a simple chime that we made using a xylophone from the music department, this was to set the mood as it was quite a light sound. The second sound was a heartbeat sound this was when Jess was when was sat on the bridge. also the sound of Jess laughing was used.

Lighting-
As we filmed outside we didnt use any artifical lighting but we filmed when it started to get dark. The first two times we tried to film it got too dark. so we realised we had to film earlier as we knew it got dark quickly. Therefore we filmed about 5 so it was light enough to film.
Strengths And Weaknesses-
Strengths- Our strengths as a group is that we are all very good friends which means we all know each other well. So this made it easier for us to co-operate as a group and give ideas on what to do for our sequence. Also because were are good friends there werent any arguments on what to do. Also another strength was that we had our own equipment, Blaise provided the group with cameras which means we didnt have to wait for school equipment to become avaliable. this saved us alot of time and meant we could get our filming done much quicker because we werent waiting about.
Weaknesses-
Our main weakness was the fact that we was simply filming to late the first 2 times which meant it got too dark to actually see the actor. This as obviously bad as it meant that we couldnt film as it was too dark. Also another weakness was the fact that faye (our first actor that we didnt use in the end) got to the filming location to late as it was the only time she could have made it to film.

Risk Assesment-
Our group sat down and disscussed risks of the filming location to make sure no one was going to be hurt/injured during fliming.
The Lake- The lake is a major hazard as it is deep and extremlly cold this time of the year there are steep banks leading down to the water. This clearly make sit easier for people to slip down the bank and fall into the water. It was easy to aviod this we just made sure we wouldnt be filming in any areas right next to the lake.
Branches- Clearly this is another big issue as we were filming in a foresty area. Someone could walk into a branch sticking out which could end up blinding someone also broken branches on the floor could trip someone up and cause a broken bone.

Steps- Around the lake there are some areas with concrete and wooden steps. if we werent being careful this could mean someone could trip on them and cut themselves or brake a bone.

Climbing Tree- For one of our shots Blaise is in a tree to get a birds eye view shot of jess To get there she had to climb the tree this could be dangerous as if the tree wasnt strong the branch could have snapped causing Blaise to fall out and hurt herself.
Busy Roads- Where our filming is taking place there is a very busy road. when getting to the filming location we had to cross it so we made sure no cars were about whilst crossing as someone would have been hurt crossing it if they were hit by a car.

Shooting Script-
1. Extreme close up of character
2. Quick flashback of her popping pills
3. Cut back to character and gradually zooming out showing her lying in leaves and forest area
4. Tripple time rewind of sequence
5. Long shot of girl skipping through woods down path
6. Close up of her face looking happy
7. Point of view shots of trees looking round, blurring
8. Aerial shot of girl spinning
9. Close up of girls face looking happy and spinning
10. Looking up at sky spinning
11. In forest establishing shots, girl appearing mutiple times spinning, throwing leaves - happy
12. Same shot but scared hiding, fading out happy
13. Long shot running down dark pat
14. Jump cut following
15. Tracking as running
16. Close up showing scared
17. Running into Den area high angled shot
18. Zooming in on girl on floor
19. Looking up at trees - blurring and fading / blinking
